SSVDP work with ‘street children” in Brazil

8 million children live in the streets of Brazil where they suffer from hunger, lack of education and affection. Throughout the country, many associations are dedicated to helping these young orphans. The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul contributes largely to this movement of help for children in danger and has even founded many specialized work. One of them, “Cidade dos Meninos”, in Belo Horizonte, in the state of Minas Gerais. The Cidade dos Meninos (The children’s city) is today a gigantic complex entirely dedicated to the vocational training of street children. It includes: flats, a dining hall, study centers, 2 schools, primary and secondary, each with a capacity of 1.500 students, a sport complex, a computerized library, a church, a laundry, a cultural center and much more. At present there are 3.500 needy youth between the ages 13 and 16 who learn different trades: gardening, bakery, cooking, hair styling, sewing, mechanics, agriculture, data processing. They also receive a solid human and spiritual formation and are prepared to reintegrated society. Religious education and sports occupy a privileged place in the daily life of students.
